Senior Indian Information Service (IIS) officer Mamta Verma has taken charge as the new Director General of Doordarshan News (DD News).
Her appointment comes at a pivotal moment for public broadcasting, as DD News navigates the twin challenges of preserving credibility and public trust while adapting to fast-paced technological shifts and changing audience consumption patterns. Verma’s elevation is being viewed as a significant move towards reinforcing DD News as a reliable, factual and balanced news platform.
Over the years, Verma has held several senior roles across government departments focused on information, communication and policy. Before assuming her current position, she served as Joint Secretary in the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj, where she contributed to strengthening grassroots governance, decentralisation, and the effective dissemination of accurate information to citizens.
In her new role as Director General, Verma is expected to guide DD News beyond its conventional identity as a government broadcaster, positioning it as a trusted public service newsroom with a wider national and global perspective.
